Excavation in the Walled Garden continued through January and February.  We are gradually clearing the foundations of the Victorian glasshouse that leaned against the heated, south facing, north wall.

The excavation is very much about uncovering structures and we do not expect many small finds, though we have found a few metal labels naming the grape varieties that were grown and a few remnants of glass bottles and shards of porcelain.

The glasshouse fell into disrepair and, we believe, was eventually demolished, but, unsurprisingly, we find a great deal of broken window glass and some fairly large remnants of corroded metal, several of which were guttering or parts of heating or water pipes.

From research we know quite a bit about the glasshouse (see Projects, Cammo Estate) but we do not know the exact dimensions, how it was divided up and used inside, or how the heating worked.  Answers to these questions are our prime objective at present.  However, going slightly off piste in January, gave us a New Year present – with the help of an old plan of the garden we were able to find the well, still in remarkably good condition and two-thirds full of clean, clear water. It has been covered over again but we will return to it later in the year.
