University of Edinburgh student, Ben Bright of EAFS is pursuing an exciting investigation at Tormain.

Ben developed an archaeological study for his dissertation, which evolved into the community archaeology project ‘The Tormain Research Project’. The purpose was to catalogue the known archaeological evidence, while investigating new sites, to promote the prehistoric heritage of Ratho and area.

EAFS was invited to partner with the project to provide professional oversight and co-direct the project.

The project started with a well attended workshop designed by AOC Archaeology Group and progressed into practical fieldwork across three farms, including a resistivity study, test
pitting, LiDAR survey, GNSS mapping and three excavation events.  Events drew residents from Ratho and the surrounding area, including High School to PhD students, hobbyists, and the curious. EAFS members assist with training, the work, and providing professional advice. Many commented that they have learned new skills and enjoyed the social aspects of the work.
