Start of November
The end of the pipe, still of unclear purpose. Was it for drainage or to carry water or heat?
Hopefully further excavation and research might provide a few answers … or maybe not. Never ending questions and mystery are so much part of the joys of archaeology!
November 7
Very poor weather caused the dig to be abandoned before midday without making any progress.
November 14
A new trench was opened. We believe we have found the edge of a border that must have been created along the front side of the glasshouse. It was marked by lovely crenelated ceramic tiles.
November 21
Sunshine, frost and archaeology that keeps revealing the complexity of our 19th century glasshouse.
In the stable block, more clearing was done and the big tree has at last been removed.
November 28
Work continued clearing the end of the glasshouse. No further clues were found to show a possible entrance.
